Chinatown Stage Two works loom as preferred tenderer selected

Stage Two of the Chinatown Revitalisation Project has reached an important milestone, with the Shire of Broome Council endorsing a preferred tenderer to undertake construction works.

At a Special Council Meeting on September 17, the Broome Shire Council endorsed chief executive officer Sam Mastrolembo to negotiate the final details of the construction contract with the preferred tenderer, Georgiou Group.

It is anticipated that Stage Two construction work will start in November, with the projected completion date in mid-2021.

Artist impressions have been made available ahead of the work starting, with positive future developments set for Napier Terrace, Carnarvon Street North and Short Street.

Premier Mark McGowan and Minister for Regional Development Alannah MacTiernan visited Broome on Monday to meet with the Shire of Broome and the preferred tenderer in Chinatown.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the Chinatown Revitalisation Project Stage Two would build on the achievements from Stage One and transform the town centre for residents and visitors alike.

“The feedback from Stage One has been overwhelmingly positive, with the work completed refreshing our streetscapes and creating socially engaging places for the community,” he said.

“This project is boosting the local economy, creating local jobs and will forge an even greater sense of pride within the Broome community.

“The start of construction work during the off-season is deliberate and has been done in an effort to minimise the impact to our hardworking local retailers.

“I look forward to negotiations between the Shire CEO and the Georgiou Group concluding – I know the finished product of Stage Two will be a major asset for the Broome community.”

About the Broome Chinatown Revitalisation Project

The $29.3 million Chinatown Revitalisation Project is being delivered jointly by the State Government and the Shire of Broome, with $22.6 million in funding from the State Government and $6.7 million from the Shire.

The project is being delivered in two stages, with 10 sub-projects comprising the $13.8 million Stage One works completed in 2019. Stage Two is currently progressing and includes another nine sub-projects, with construction expected to commence in the last 2020 quarter through to mid 2021.

The aim of the sub-projects is to make the Chinatown precinct more attractive to locals, visitors and businesses, and encourage activity and long-term investment into the heart and soul of Broome.
