Construction update

Work underway on Napier Terrace.

Work underway on Napier Terrace.

So much has happened on the ground over the past month! The roads and streetscaping are really starting to take shape, and it won’t be long before more roads re-open and some of the footpaths are complete. Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening on the ground in Chinatown Broome this month:

Short Street West

The footpaths are nearly complete, underground services are being finished in front of the new businesses (Jandinaz is looking great!), and we’re continuing the retaining wall construction near Short Street Gallery and Dragonfly Café.

Short Street East

With the brick paving on the road now complete, the crew have turned their efforts to completing the footpath paving – it’s going to look amazing!

Carnarvon Street North

Kerbing and concrete footings are being completed through the street, and we’ll be installing sections of footpath as soon as possible so we can allow pedestrian foot-traffic along the street as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Napier Terrace

The footpaths on Napier Terrace East are nearly finished, and they’ll be reopened very soon! Earthworks and preparation for landscaping along the top of the retaining walls is also progressing. On Napier Terrace West our focus has shifted to the new road alignment and constructing the new intersection tie-ins. Traffic should be back on the new road in the next couple of weeks.

Information regarding access and roadwork maps for construction areas, including temporary road closures and alternative parking is being advertised in the paper, on radio, through our social channels as well as on the Chinatown website. Traders can also contact Julia, Chinatown Coordinator on 9191 8738 or by email to find out more.

Physio on the move

When the opportunity to move onto Dampier Terrace arose, Kimberley Physiotherapy owners Liz Wicks and Simon Dean decided Chinatown would be a great central location that would provide convenient access to all.

With demand for physiotherapy and other allied health services steadily growing, Kimberley Physio will expand to five physiotherapists, a remedial massage therapist and a hand specialist by July. Of course you can’t have a great business without a friendly front of house so there are also two smiling staff members at reception ready to welcome you!

Kimberley Physiotherapy introduced Pilates to Broome over ten years ago and the popularity of their reformer classes is still increasing.

“These classes are always instructed by physios and are a safe and effective low impact exercise for any level of fitness.

“They’re so popular we are going to introduce new lunchtime sessions now that we are in Chinatown so people can do a class in their lunch hour,” Liz said.

The new premises have private consulting rooms, a room for visiting specialists and a workout studio with reformer machines. To make an appointment or book a class, visit the Kimberley Physiotherapy website. You’ll find them at 27 Dampier Terrace, next to Yane’s Gallery and the Broome Advertiser / Hit FM.

A dream come true for Janelle

The sudden passing of her mother inspired long-term Broome resident Janelle Saffrey to create Jandinaz, a boutique clothing and homewares store recently opened in Chinatown.

“After the tragic loss, I needed to find some new direction in my life in order to cope with the overwhelming grief and trauma.

“Now I’m sinking all my energy into Jandinaz, as a testimony and legacy to my mum, who was a vibrant, vivacious and beautiful lady,” Janelle said.

After searching for suitable premises for a while, Janelle finally came across an empty property on the corner of Short Street and Carnarvon Street which provided a perfect blank canvas for her dream shop, to be called Jandinaz, after Janelle’s childhood nickname.

The boutique store showcases a range of Australian designers including: Kita-Ku for curvy ladies up to size 24; Dreamers & Drifters from Byron Bay; Cienna from Melbourne, who have stunning cool silk blend fabrics and Monte & Lou swimwear.

Jandinaz also stocks children’s swimwear, swim nappies and clothes, men’s race shirts and shorts, homewares, gifts, shoes, a selection of one-off designer hats and fascinators by Shanz, and local Hidden Valley products.

You’ll find Jandinaz at Shop 8, Short Street, opposite Dragonfly Café.

Discovery Festival program packs a punch

The Chinatown Discovery Festival in May is quickly approaching and is packed with a range of fun events and activities that celebrate our Broome heritage. It’s time to start making plans and thinking about which events you want to participate in or attend as they often book out fast.

Registration has just opened for the Pearlers’ Games, which this year will see the return of some incredible events including the Cygnet Bay Pearls Masters Cup, the Willie Creek Pearls Dive Collector Challenge, the Allure South Sea Pearls Bill Reed Flipper Challenge and the Westpac Tug-O-War. A huge thank you to our sponsors for supporting these events! Visit the Chinatown Broome Facebook page for registration details.

We’re also very excited to launch the Broome Family Photo Room, a community portrait project supported by the Chinatown Revitalisation Project and Camera Story. The project will offer everyone in the Broome community free professional portrait sessions and capture the diversity of our local people. The final portraits will be printed to create a large-scale public art photo mural that will be unveiled during the Chinatown Discovery Festival.

To be part of the project, register online via the Camera Story or Chinatown Broome Facebook page and attend the pop-up photobooth on Dampier Terrace on 30 April, 1 May, 3 May or 8 May.

The Discovery Festival program, including registration links, can be found on the Chinatown Broome Facebook page and website

Art Update

Intricate carvings on the Divers’ sculpture.

Intricate carvings on the Divers’ sculpture.

There’s lots happening behind the scenes on the numerous pieces of artwork that have been commissioned as part of the Broome Chinatown Revitalisation project.

The Divers’ Sculpture, being carved by Nic Compton, will be installed on Short Street near the corner of Carnarvon St once construction works are complete.

A bronze sculpture of Sam Male will be installed near to the Streeter and Male store to reflect his lifetime of contributions to Broome. A huge thank you to the Male family for their generous contribution to this work of art.

The dramatic entry statement ‘Fusion - Interwoven Cultures’ will be installed on the Napier Terrace and Carnarvon Street roundabout once construction works are complete. Alex and Nicole Mickel, the Safehaven artists behind the sculpture, will be in Broome to oversee the installation of this significant piece of art, and will be holding a ‘Meet the Artist’ event on 11 May.  Follow our Facebook page to find out more about the installation as information becomes available.
