Chinatown Discovery Festival 2021

Friday 28 May – afternoon & evening

Saturday 29 May – morning

Sunday 30 May – full day

  • The Discovery Festival is designed for the local community to come together in Chinatown to celebrate and reflect on local stories and heritage.

  • This year’s theme for the festival is Growing up in Broome and Chinatown, and the program will feature activities for different demographics and most of the activities will be free to attend.

  • Some key events of the Festival are the Pearlers’ Games, Big Mama musical production “Stories of Strength – Reflections on Growing up in old Broome”, sand sculpture carving and workshops, oriental kites display and kite making workshops for kids and adults and interactive art displays by local artists.

  • The Camera Story team will also be conducting a professional photo portrait session with a theme “My Broome Family” which is open for individual interpretation. The portraits will then be displayed in Chinatown as part of the Discovery Festival 2021 and will be a reflection of how diverse the Broome community remains. Photo sessions are free and will be held at the start of May – follow the Chinatown Broome Facebook page for further details.

  • Sun Studios and Broome Performing Arts Co-op have also been engaged to bring their own flavour and interpretation of the theme of the Festival.

  • If you or your organisation/community group would like to come in as an event sponsor, or if you wish to put on an activity or if you wish to compete in the Pearlers’ Games, contact Chinatown Coordinator on julia.mikhlik@broome.wa.gov.au.
