Stage Two Designs Now 85% Complete

Thank you to everyone who attended our information sessions recently, to learn about the designs for Stage Two. At the sessions, stakeholders were briefed on the progress of the proposed streetscape designs, which are now 85% complete.

The streetscape designs for Short Street, Carnarvon St North and Napier Terrace were shown and discussed, indicating the type of finishing and landscaping proposed for all these areas including shade, lighting and smart cities elements such as smart irrigation.

The drawings will now be finalised ready to issue documents for construction tender submissions towards mid-August, with a view of construction commencing in October 2020.

Delivery key to Ginreab Thai survival

Walking through the doors of Ginreab Thai, the aromatic aromas of delicious Thai food can’t help but make your stomach rumble with anticipation. Owners Martin and Air had to adapt to survive when COVID-19 first hit, quickly moving from dine in service to a take-away and delivery model. Delivering more than 820 meals to Broome homes from mid-March to end-June represented a massive 40% of their trade and was key to their survival.

Martin said the demand for their deliveries combined with the enthusiasm and appreciation they received by Broome locals was heart-warming.

“This gave us the inspiration to stay open and fighting for our customers for however long this ‘challenge’ extended,” he said.

Martin said setting and meeting six objectives was key for the business’ survival:

  1. Not to panic and to keep a positive mindset.

  2. Keep as many staff employed and busy as possible.

  3. Think ‘outside the box’ and encourage ingenuity.

  4. Aiming to break even financially during COVID-19 trading and keeping the business debt free with a bit of money in the bank.

  5. Paying all our local suppliers on time as a priority.

  6. Provide leadership and support to the other Broome business owners by helping with inspiration and ideas to continue to not only survive - but thrive.

Martin said they were extremely proud to be part of the Broome food industry, and would continue to offer the delivery service even though dine in has now recommenced.

“It has been wonderful to see how most restaurants have adapted and marketed themselves to the changing environment and provided awesome food and service to their customers,” he said.

“We will be eternally grateful to our customers who provided us a life-line to continue delivering our food and service with love and passion.”.png

Three Angels celebrate one year with in-store promotions

Three Angels in Paspaley Plaza recently applied for one of the Chinatown $500 activation grants to celebrate their first birthday.

The successful funding application helped with in-store promotions on the first anniversary of their opening including a door prize, live musician and catering to attract customers. Believe it or not, with a little promotion and something to celebrate, it resulted in their best day of sales since the day they opened, and this is even with COVID-19 travel restrictions still being in place! Well done Three Angels!

Ainslie and Jade McDonald from Three Angels would like to thank the Broome community for their wonderful support over the past 12 months and especially through the tough times of COVID-19.
“It was very challenging to have to close for three weeks, but it gave us the opportunity to develop new techniques of creating different candle concepts, which has been a real success.

Shopping locally is so important to our small community, now more than ever, so thank you again Broome.”

Activation grants will be available until June 2021. To apply simply contact Chinatown Coordinator Julia.

Meet the Team

Latoya Lawford, the Team’s Admin Support Officer.

Latoya Lawford, the Team’s Admin Support Officer.

Continuing our introductions of the Chinatown Revitalisation Project team, this month we met Latoya Lawford.

Latoya has started an Administration Traineeship as the Project Administration Support Officer for the Chinatown Revitalisation Project. Undertaking a 12-month full-time contract with the Shire and TAFE is keeping her very busy and learning on the job while she completes her Certificate IV in Administration.

Latoya recently completed Year 12 at Broome Senior High School and is a gun basketballer. She’ll be a very valuable member of the team, and we have enjoyed welcoming her into the project team.

You might meet Latoya when she joins Julia, our Chinatown Coordinator, on her town walks around Chinatown.

Shire launches Buy Local campaign

The Shire of Broome has committed to a Community Support Package, which includes 16 financial and social initiatives to offset the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our community.

One of the initiatives is the commitment to a Buy Local campaign to promote our fantastic local businesses and encourage residents to support them financially.

The Shire is acutely aware that Broome businesses are doing it tough, especially as COVID-19 will continue to impact the usually buoyant tourist season for some time. Residents will start to notice the Buy Local content both online and around town.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said it was critical for residents to rally behind the business community.

“Broome has amazing community spirit; it is one of our major strengths,” he said.

“It has well and truly been on show recently as we have worked together to keep our community safe.

“Moving forward, we must continue to harness that togetherness and keep supporting our local businesses in these tough times.

“I’ve been heartened by how they have used their initiative to survive, diversify their product offerings and access new markets.

“While the forthcoming influx of tourists will provide a welcome financial boost, it is critical that we all be deliberate and considered in our efforts to buy local.”

The campaign will include a chance to win a Weber Baby Q (BBQ) when locals spend $100 or more at local stores. Full details to be released soon.
