NEWSLETTER JULY 2020 - CHINATOWN BROOME

Contractor sought for Stage Two construction works

The Chinatown Revitalisation Project has reached a major milestone this week with the release of tender documents seeking a main contractor for the Stage Two construction works.

Input and feedback from community members, stakeholders and Chinatown traders in the early planning days has helped form the project’s masterplan and played a key role in the designs.

Carnarvon Street North, Short Street and Napier Terrace will receive a similar refresh to that already delivered in Dampier Terrace and Carnarvon Street South in Stage One with new lighting, shade structures, street furniture and landscaping all part of the plan for key streets in Chinatown.

Tender documents are available now for interested parties to download from tenderlink.com/broome. In addition to value for money, the tender will also be assessed on criteria including construction methodology and past experience, maximising local content and indigenous participation.

Tenders close at 4pm AWST on Friday 21 August 2020.

Chinatown art receives heritage commendation award

We’re excited to announce that the Chinatown Public Art and Interpretation Program from Stage One of the revitalisation project has received a commendation award in the 2020 Western Australia Heritage Awards interpretation category!

The program was recognised for its commitment to the telling of Chinatown’s multicultural stories, how the art celebrates and places Broome’s diverse history and how it has engaged the community.

We’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the extensive program of public art and interpretation in Stage One, including all the incredibly talented artists and creators. We’re excited to be delivering more amazing artwork as part of the Stage Two works – watch this space for more details soon!

Ladies’ Night

Ladies, it’s time to frock up and head into Chinatown on Friday 7 August for a huge night of instore promotions and activities, entertainment, food and bubbles!

Ladies’ Night is back for the third year in a row, and whilst there may not be any races this year to frock up for, the Chinatown Traders, supported by the revitalisation project, are ready to welcome you for a fun packed evening of entertainment and activities from 4.30 to 8.00pm.

We’re expecting big numbers as people come into Chinatown for the first major event to take place this year. It’s a great opportunity to get a group of friends together and take advantage of some great shopping deals, whilst socialising and being entertained by fire twirlers and local musicians including Adele Oliver, Damar Isherwood and more.

Check out the Chinatown Facebook events page for details of all the participating retailers and what they have planned – more are being added every day! The event program will be made available closer to the time.
