Stage Two Roadworks Underway
Work is now underway on Short Street West, with the road closed from the Paspaley Plaza car park exit through to the Short Street / Carnarvon Street roundabout.
Once this section of roadworks is complete, the road closure will switch to the western end of Short Street which will be closed from Old Broome Road through to the Paspaley Plaza car park, with access to the car park being maintained from the Carnarvon Street roundabout end. Broome Visitor Centre will be accessed via the Hamersley Street entrance.
From Wednesday 18 November, Napier Terrace East will be closed for approximately 4 weeks. Parking will be available in the car park in front of First National / Bankwest, with access via Carnarvon Street. The Roey bottleshop drive through facilities are also being upgraded during this time, and will be closed completely for a couple of weeks and then open to foot traffic via Dampier Terrace.
Construction is proposed to take place Monday to Saturday, with no night works currently planned. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the area at all times during the construction period, and traffic management personnel will be on site.
Information regarding access and roadwork maps for construction areas, including temporary road closures and alternative parking is being advertised in the paper, on radio, through our social channels as well as on the Chinatown website. Traders can also contact Julia, Chinatown Coordinator on 9191 8738 or by email to find out more.
Divers Quarters Sculpture Taking Shape
Public art pieces are coming together behind the scenes as the revitalisation project enters the construction phase. Short Street will be home to a jarrah carved sculpture called ‘The Divers Quarters’, featuring a small dinghy that is now being carved. The carving includes a range of iconic elements representative of the lives of the divers and crew such as boots, helmets and shells.
The entire piece will be about 3m square in total and reflects Chinatown’s pearling heritage, the lives of the lugger crews and their work on the boats as well as on shore. The mast will have a rope stretching down its length which sits at half-mast, honouring those who lost their lives in the pearling industry. The rope will also have decorative intertwined threads symbolising the multicultural crews and intermingling of cultures.
The sculpture is being carved by Nic Compton, who also produced the Shopkeepers on Carnarvon Street. The new sculpture will be installed once roadworks are finished in early 2021.
Christmas Trails Coming To Town
Chinatown will come alive with Christmas cheer and lots of family fun at the annual Christmas trails event on Friday 4 December.
Starting from 4pm, Carnarvon Street, Johnny Chi Lane and Dampier Terrace will host activities and entertainment for the whole family, including food trucks, face-painting, meeting Santa and his elves, camel feeding, water play, craft activities and entertainment from local musicians, Broome Performing Arts Coop and Sun Studios. There will also be a free screening of ‘Jingle All The Way’ at Sun Pictures at 7pm, and plenty of opportunity to support local business with some Christmas shopping!
The annual Combined Churches Christmas Carols on Male Oval will be held separately this year, on Sunday 13 December at 6.30pm – bring a chair or rug and enjoy this family friendly event!
Johnny Chi Lane Welcomes New Traders
If you haven’t visited Johnny Chi Lane recently, it’s undergoing a transformation as multiple new businesses open their doors to breathe new life into the Lane.
Neighbouring Aiyana Luxe Hair salon, local medical professionals Dr Emma Marshall, Kirstie Sappelli (clinical nurse) and Stacey Mills (registered nurse) have recently opened the doors to Ederra Aesthetics, Broome’s only dedicated aesthetic clinic. From dermal fillers to anti-wrinkle treatments and anti-ageing procedures, laser and IPL, Ederra’s small dedicated team offers a range of cosmetic services and beauty treatments to help fight the signs of ageing.
The central kiosk is also being renovated and will reopen this week as a juice, coffee and gelato bar, to be complemented with a new café/restaurant in mid-December. The new venues will be collectively known as Chi Mayi Kitchen, named after the location in Johnny Chi Lane and the Yawuru word for food, and are run by Annalisa and Tex Kearney, formerly of Runway Bar.
Paradise Linens is going from strength to strength in their new location, having recently moved from their original shop on Carnarvon Street. Owner Suezette said she had outgrown the old shop and had been searching for bigger premises for her successful homewares, linen and children/baby products business.
“When the Johnny Chi Lane lease came up, I jumped at the chance to expand the business.
“I’ve been able to expand the amount of stock I carry on existing product ranges, and branch out into new areas like gourmet gifts,” Suezette said.
