Full steam ahead for Chinatown transformation
If you’ve just returned to Broome after the holidays or haven’t been into Chinatown for a while, you’ll notice some major changes to traffic flow as we move into the next exciting phase of construction – Stage Two of the Chinatown Revitalisation Project.
The northern section of Carnarvon Street between the Short Street and Gray Street roundabouts is being transformed into a cooler pedestrian friendly precinct with plenty of shade and much improved drainage, streetscaping, and street furniture. The upgrades include outdoor seating, bike racks and water fountains to complement the revitalisation works already completed on Dampier Terrace and the southern portion of Carnarvon Street.
The biggest temporary traffic flow change you will notice is Carnarvon Street North is now closed to thoroughfare traffic and will remain like this for a few months while roadworks take place. Once the roadworks are complete, crews will move onto the ‘landscaping’ portion of the works, which includes lighting, hydraulic, structures, street furniture, footpaths, retaining walls, reticulation, and planting.
Every effort is being made to minimise disruption and maintain access to businesses, and everyone is encouraged to make use of the alternative parking options available (indicated on the map below) while these major upgrades are underway.
Works on Short Street East
Short Street East is scheduled to be closed from early February to late May, pending weather conditions.
Pedestrian access will be maintained along both sides of the road to easily access Mitre 10, Male & Co, Streeter & Male, PRD Nationwide and Paspaley Pearls.
Access point information including updated parking and pedestrian maps will be provided once the traffic management plans are finalised.
Information regarding access and roadwork maps for construction areas, including temporary road closures and alternative parking, is being advertised in the paper, on radio, and through our social channels as well as on the Chinatown website. Traders can also contact Julia, Chinatown Coordinator on 9191 8738 or by email to find out more.

Broome booming over wet season
Local businesses in Chinatown and the rest of Broome are reporting a bumper wet season, with roaring trade over the Christmas period and strong visitor numbers even through the traditionally quieter month of January.
Some businesses have resumed normal trading hours, and many food venues that would usually close for a significant period are staying open to capitalise on the unusually busy trade.
If you’re looking for a food fix, you’re in luck! Many of the Paspaley Plaza outlets are open (or will be re-opening by the end of January) such as Son Ming, Green Mango Café, Dragonfly Café and the new Chi Mayi Kitchen Coffee, Juice and Gelato Bar.
If it’s a gift or something for the home or kitchen you’re after, there’s a huge choice in Chinatown. The new, expanded Clifton Collective store, Monsoonal Blues, Three Angels, Broome Thyme and Crystal Fusion have something for every style and budget. Sportspower is also open and has all the equipment you need to help with those new year’s resolutions!
Rip Curl will have you looking stylish with a huge range of clothing and swimwear, and while you’re in Chinatown why not stop by the Barber of Broome to complete your 2021 new look.
Following the re-opening of Napier Terrace to traffic, the Roey bottleshop is now back at its usual location with plenty of seasonal specials on offer, and BWS will be trading as normal during the Carnarvon Street closure with temporary parking on hand immediately adjacent to the store and accessible via Gray Street.
Chinatown Collective Selfie Comp Winners
Three lucky Broome residents each have $300 to spend in Chinatown, thanks to the Chinatown Collective’s Christmas selfie competition.
To enter the draw, participants had to spend $30 at a Chinatown business, snap themselves in store in the personalised selfie frame and then post to social media using the tag #chinatownbroomecollective.
Congratulations to Katrina Hewitt, Vicki McCormack and Karla Foster for their winning selfies taken at Broome Gallery, The Roey and Son Ming restaurant respectively.
The Chinatown Broome Collective is a positive and proactive initiative that includes volunteer businesses, landowners and residents working collaboratively with Shire of Broome to reinvigorate and activate Chinatown. Watch this space for more initiatives in 2021!
